(Archilochus colubris)
Indiana, USA – August 2022

A male sits in a juniper bush and shows his iridescent, metallic shimmering throat, to which this hummingbird owes its name. This blaze of color can only be seen from a few angles and depending on the incidence of light. Seen from most other angles, the throat appears matte black, as seen in the second photo.

The little bird jealously guards its territory, including our feeder, and quite aggressively drives away any intruders or food competitors.
